Pneumatic Wheels

Pneumatic Wheels

Pneumatic Wheels for Rough or Uneven Terrain

Browse our range of pneumatic wheels — the go-to choice wherever equipment has to roll over gravel, grass, cobbles or rough ground. With air filled tyres cushioning every bump, pneumatic wheels make light work of surfaces that would rattle solid wheels to bits.

We stock pneumatic wheels suitable for sack trucks, trolleys, wheelbarrows and garden equipment, in various sizes and with a choice of bearings and centres to suit the job.

Every product lists its key specifications — diameter, tyre size, hub length, bore and load capacity in kg — making it easy to find an exact match for the wheel you're replacing.

What Are Pneumatic Wheels?

A pneumatic wheel uses a rubber tyre inflated with air, just like a car or bicycle tyre, mounted on a rigid centre. The cushion of air flexes as the wheel rolls, absorbing shocks and vibrations before they reach the equipment — or the person pushing it.

That flexibility is what sets pneumatic tyres apart. On rough or uneven terrain, the tyre shapes itself around bumps and hollows, keeping more of the tread in contact with the ground for grip, stability and easier movement under load.

The Benefits of Air Filled Tyres

Excellent shock absorption is the headline benefit: no other wheel type comes close for comfort on rough ground. Fragile or unstable loads travel more securely, and goods arrive undamaged rather than shaken about en route.

There's a human benefit too. Less vibration means less stress through the handles of a sack truck or wheelbarrow — noticeably kinder on hands, wrists and back over a long day, and quieter as well.

The adaptability of pneumatic wheels is the other big win: the same wheel that handles a smooth warehouse floor will cross a muddy site access or a gravel path without complaint, making them a genuinely versatile choice for equipment that moves between indoor and outdoor areas.

Where Pneumatic Wheels Work Best

Sack Trucks and Trolleys

The classic application. Pneumatic tyres let sack trucks and trolleys carry heavy goods across kerbs, cobbles, grass and uneven surfaces with far less effort — essential for deliveries that don't end at the kerbside.

Wheelbarrows and Garden Equipment

For wheelbarrows, garden trolleys and lawn equipment, an air filled tyre provides the grip and cushioning to cross lawns, borders and gardens without digging in or jolting the load.

Construction Sites and Outdoor Work

On construction sites, pneumatic wheels handle rubble, ruts and soft ground where hard wheels simply dig in or bounce. Choose a robust steel centre with roller bearings for the toughest, heaviest applications.

Launching Trolleys and Leisure Use

From boat launching trolleys to festival carts and domestic projects, pneumatic tyres cope with sand, shingle and slipways — anywhere grip and superior shock absorption matter more than outright speed.

Sizes, Centres and Bearings

Pneumatic wheels are traditionally sized in inches, and you'll find the imperial tyre size moulded on the sidewall (3.00-4 is a common example) alongside the metric diameter in our listings. Note that overall diameter can vary slightly with inflation, so always check the stated specification when selecting a replacement.

Wheel centres come in two main types: a durable polypropylene centre keeps weight down for light and medium duty use, while a pressed steel centre adds strength for heavier loads. Bearings range from simple plain bores for occasional use, through ball bearing options, to roller bearings that make moving heavy equipment noticeably easier.

To match a replacement wheel, check four things: overall diameter, tyre size, bore diameter, and hub length. All four are listed on every product — and if your measurements don't quite line up, our reducing bushes can adapt the bore for a secure fit.

Pneumatic vs Solid Wheels: Which Should You Choose?

The trade-off is simple. Pneumatic tyres give the best ride and grip, but like any inflated tyre they can suffer punctures in environments with nails, thorns or sharp debris, and they need occasional topping up with air for optimal performance.

Solid wheels — including our puncture proof range, made from solid polyurethane — trade a little cushioning for zero maintenance and no flats, ever. For predominantly indoor use on smooth floors, a standard solid wheel is often the more practical choice altogether.

Our rule of thumb: choose pneumatic for comfort and rough ground, puncture proof for rough ground plus sharp debris, and solid wheels for smooth surfaces. Depending on your application, we're happy to recommend the right type — just ask.
