Nylon is a hard wheel material, and that hardness is exactly what makes it work. A hard tread has a small contact patch with the floor, which means low rolling resistance - a nylon wheel castor takes less effort to get moving and keep moving than a soft-tyred castor carrying the same load. Hard wheels also roll more easily over soft or uneven surfaces, and the nylon itself is lightweight and highly resistant to wear, so the wheel keeps its shape and its smooth movement through years of use.
That combination is ideal for warehouse and factory use: smooth concrete, long runs, frequent movement and loads that would quickly flatten a softer tyre. If you're moving equipment by hand all day, a nylon wheel is one of the simplest ways to reduce the effort involved.
No single wheel material is suitable for every job, so it's worth knowing where nylon sits against the alternatives:
Polyurethane is quieter than nylon and kinder to floors, and still offers high load capacity - a good choice where noise matters or floors need protecting.
Rubber tyres give quiet operation and absorb shock, which suits retail, hospitality, furniture and display units, at the cost of higher rolling resistance. See our rubber castors.
Thermoplastic rubber (TPR) is non marking and quiet - the standard choice for catering and educational equipment.
Cast iron and steel offer maximum strength and resistance to high temperatures for harsh industrial environments.
Choose nylon when easy rolling, wear resistance and value on a hard surface matter more than quietness. Choose a softer tread when the floor, or the people working near it, need protecting.
Add up the weight of the equipment plus its maximum load, then divide by three - on uneven surfaces only three castors may be carrying the load at any moment. Each castor's rated load capacity should meet or exceed that figure. When handling heavy loads, always size up: an overloaded castor wears quickly and can fail without warning, so a margin of strength is essential to ensure safety and productivity. For heavier loads, the 100mm plate fitted castors rated to 180kg each, and the 125mm braked bolt hole castor at 250kg, give a set of four a comfortable margin under most trucks and trolleys.
Remember that castor sizes refer to the wheel diameter, not the overall height - a 100mm nylon castor stands around 125-132mm tall, and a 125mm castor around 155mm. Check which measurement you're working from before you order a replacement.
Swivel castors rotate through 360 degrees for manoeuvrability in tight spaces. Fixed castors track in a straight line for control over longer runs - most four-castor trolleys use two of each, steering like a supermarket trolley and running straight when pushed. Braked models lock the wheel so equipment stays put while it's loaded, worked on or parked. Fixed castors are available in plate fitting only, because a bolt hole fixing would simply let the castor spin.

They are a hard wheel, so they are not the quietest option and are not the first choice on surfaces that mark easily; polyurethane or rubber is more suitable for those jobs.
If your equipment has a flat underside, use a plate fitted castor, which bolts through four holes. If it has a tubular frame or a single central fixing, use a bolt hole castor with an M12 hole.
